SEX
OFFENDER REGISTRY
It is our goal to protect our community by releasing
necessary and relevant information about certain sex
offenders residing or working in our town.
On September 10, 1999, a new law pertaining to the Sex
Offender Registry and Community Notification Act became
effective in Massachusetts. The new law revamped the
old Sex Offender Registry and Community Notification
Act and made several significant changes.
Under
this new law there are currently three levels of notification
depending on the degree of risk of reoffense and the
degree of dangerousness posed to the public by
the sex offender.
There
are over 17,000 offenders statewide who are currently
being classified into one of the appropriate levels.
This process is lengthy, and upon completion of this
process the Sex Offender Registry Board notifies the
Abington Police Department of all the offender’s
information and classification level. Currently the
Town of Abington has several offenders living in town.
This list is growing and will continue to grow as the
classification of offenders statewide is completed.
